Summer Comedy 2017… Here’s eight stand-up shows for summer including two very Hot Ticket Alerts!
Paula Poundstone, Ridgefield Playhouse – Fri, 6/2: 8pm: Recognized as one of Comedy Central’s 100 Greatest Stand-Ups Of All Time, Paula Poundstone is the first woman to win the cable ACE for Best Standup Comedy Special, and the first woman to perform standup at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Hot ticket Alert! Demetri Martin, Capitol Theatre – Fri, 6/9”: 8pm: Emmy nominated writer for The Conan O’Brien Show, Martin is best known as a regular performer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and for his Comedy Central show Important Things with Demetri Martin. His act is noted for his use of deadpan one-liners, drawings on a large pad and his comedic use of musical accompaniment in the vein of Steve Martin. Boomer Comedy Unlimited Presents, Paramount Hudson Valley – Fri, 6/9: 8pm: Four stand-out stand-up artists including club headliner Carol Siskind’s edgy take on her own neurotic relationships; two-time Grammy nominee Judy Tenuto for her comedy CDs Attention Butt Pirates and Lesbetarians and In Goddess We Trust; Mark Schiff (HBO and Showtime Specials) and Ken Rogerson, “He makes the absurd seem logical.” –The Boston Herald (Paramount Hudson Valley, 1008 Brown St., Peekskill: www.paramounthudsonvalley.com)
Tom Papa, Ridgefield Playhouse – Fri, 6/16: 8pm: Tom’s 2013 hour-long stand-up special, Tom Papa: Freaked Out, was named one of the 10 Best Comedy Albums of 2013 by Laughspin.com. His first special, Tom Papa Live in New York City, premiered on Comedy Central in 2012. Tom marvels at how human beings get up every morning and all the things they have to do before they go outside. Hot ticket Alert! Bill Burr, Capitol Theatre – Thurs-Sat, 6/29-7/1: 8pm: They need three nights to capture all the ticket sales from this comedian who sold out Madison Square Garden and Carnegie Hall. He gained notoriety for his role in Chappelle’s Show and he is a regular on Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. Burr has five hour-long Netflix stand-up specials on his resume along with his animated hit series F is For Family. Magically Hysterical, Elliot Zimet and Judy Gold, Paramount Hudson Valley – Sat, 7/8: 8pm: Master Illusionist Elliot Zimet and award-winning comedian Judy Gold blow you mind and make you laugh in this magic/stand-up mash up. Zimet was a semi-finalist on America’s Got Talent. Judy Gold starred in two one-woman Off Broadway Shows, The Judy Show – My Life as a Sitcom and 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother. Oy vey! John Mulaney, Capitol Theatre – Thurs- 7/20: 8pm: An Emmy Award winning writer and former Weekend Update correspondent on SNL, Mulaney recently starred in the Broadway hit, Oh, Hello on Broadway alongside Nick Kroll. In 2015 he released his 3rd hour-long Netflix Original stand up special titled “The Comeback Kids” which the AV Club called “his best hour of his career.” In his review of Mulaney’s 2012 Comedy Central special New In Town, Entertainment Weekly’s Ken Tucker hailed Mulaney as “one of the best stand-up comics alive.” (Capitol Theatre, 149 Westchester Ave., Port Chester; www.capitoltheatre.com)
Tim Hawkins, Palace Theatre Stamford – Fri, 7/21: 730 pm: Making toast and eating Crispy Cremes (“like eating baby angels”) inform his family comedy. But his comedic music videos, The Chick-fil-A Song, Yoga Pants, Aging Rockers, Things You Don’t Say to Your Wife, Cletus Take the Reel, A Homeschool Family, and The Government Can. Judd Apatow, Ridgefield Playhouse – Sun, 7/23: 7pm: Apatow’s film credits include hit comedies The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Bridesmaids, Knocked Up, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pineapple Express, The Cable Guy, Anchorman and Anchorman 2.
