Broadway Musical Revue, Chappaqua Library’s Tribute to Broadway – Sun, 10/8: 3pm: The Library’s salute to Broadway month kicks off with this musical revue starring Soprano Erin Stewart (A Little Night Music) and David Dewitt (Phantom of the Opera). Tim Kubart & The Space Cadets, ChappPac – Sun, 10/8: 2pm: Awarded a Grammy for Best Children’s Album, Tim Kubart is the host of the popular preschool program Sunny Side Up, on NBC Universal’s Sprout Channel. He is also known as the “Tambourine Guy” from the international touring group Postmodern Jukebox. Tim Kubart & The Space Cadets deliver a family friendly dance party for all ages. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Chappaqua Library’s Tribute to Broadway – Tues, 10/10: 7pm: Chappaqua Librarian, film historian and adjunct professor at St. Francis College, Phillip Harwood screens Stephen Sondheim’s 1962 screwball musical set in ancient Rome that includes the classic song “Comedy Tonight”. 3rd Annual Chappaqua Scotch Tasting for Type 1 Diabetes, Whippoorwill Club – Fri, 10/13: 7:30pm: “Finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes needs to be turned up a notch. Let’s start, by drinking some Scotch!” Tim Chizak and Brad Rinzler invite you to a guy’s night of camaraderie, good cheer and scotch tasting sponsored by Park Avenue Liquors, and led by the award winning whiskeys from Macallan. New Castle’s Carrie Chapman Catt & The Women’s Suffrage Opening – Horace Greeley House – Fri, 10/13: 6-9pm: Opening of new exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State and the life and times of Carrie Chapman Catt, a leading suffragist and former New Castle resident. 5th Annual Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival, Bell Middle School – Sat, 10/14: 10am-4pm: Our What To Do With the Kids Bucket List starts with the Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival. It’s been written up in the New York Times and The Huffington Postand regularly draws over 4,000 visitors. The kids’ book fest showcases over 90 popular children’s book authors including co-author and illustrator of the Pinkaliciousseries, Victoria Kann. Most of them will be onsite, doing signings and book readings for the kids. The show also features authors of books for young adults, children’s entertainment and of course the Great Chappaqua Bake Sale that raises funds for No Kid Hungry. The Great Chappaqua Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry, Bell Middle School – Sat, 10/14: 10am-4pm:The Great Chappaqua Bake Sale manages the snacks at the Chappaqua Children’s Book Fair offering baked goods and raffle prizes donated by families and businesses in the Chappaqua area. It has raised over $100,000 for No Kid Hungry in the past seven years. Both events run in conjunction at the Bell Middle School. (50 Senter St., Chappaqua; like them on Facebook.)
Sō Percussion, ChappPac, Sat, 10/14: 8pm: This groundbreaking percussion quartet, known for their use of exotic instruments like the glockenspiel, bowed marimba and aluminum pipes, was praised by The New Yorker for their “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam.” Sō’s repertoire includes 20th century “classics” by John Cage and Steve Reich and original works. The Fabulous Broadway Theaters Tour, Chappaqua Library’s Tribute to Broadway – Thurs, 10/19: 10am: Tour the Great White Way with Anthony Robins, a 20-year veteran of New York’s Landmark Commission. Little Shop of Horrors, Chappaqua Library’s Tribute to Broadway – Sat, 10/21: 3pm: Chappaqua Librarian, film historian and adjunct professor at St. Francis College, Phillip Harwood screens the 1986 film adaptation of the long-running Off-Broadway musical about a florist shop owner and a talking Venus fly trap. The film stars Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia and Steve Martin. The stage production from Alan Menken and Howard Ashman was based on the 1960 cult film by Roger Corman. Halloween Carnival & Ragamuffin Parade, Chappaqua Train Station – Sun 10/22: 12pm: The carnival starts at 12 with giant slide games, bounce castle, go carts, rides, cotton candy, popcorn and music. Bob Fosse’s Broadway, Lecture, Chappaqua Library’s Tribute to Broadway – Tues, 10/24: 7pm: Kevin Winkler, author of the forthcoming book Big Deal: Bob Fosse and Dance in the American Musical explores the roots of Fosse’s iconic choreography. The lectures touches on the highlights of his stage career and his continuing influence on Broadway Dance. Fosse’s blend of jazz and vaudevillian dance motifs is reviewed through his work on The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, Chicago, Sweet Charity and Pippin. Book Talk, In Defiance: Runaways from Slavery in the Mid-Hudson Valley, Greeley House – Thurs, 10/26: 7:30pm: Susan Stressin-Cohn and Ashley Hurlburt-Biagini discuss their new book chronicling the history of slavery in the Hudson Valley from 1735-1831. The book features 523 archival newspaper notices for runaway slaves, 36 illustrations and 5 maps. Susan is a former professor at SUNY New Paltz.
