Greenwich International Film Festival – Thurs-Sun, 5/31-6/3: 70 events at various locations including a concert by Grammy Award-winner Lauryn Hill at the Opening Gala; Spotlight discussions with actor/director Tony Goldwyn (Ghost) and Academy Award-winning writer/director James Ivory (Call Me By Your Name). The festival’s Centerpiece Films are Yen Tan’s1985, about a closeted young man during the AIDS crisis; A Woman Captured, about a woman kept as a domestic slave for ten years, and comedian Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade that follows a young girl’s disastrous final week of middle school. Other notable films include documentary feature Sammy Davis Jr., I Gotta Be Me, James Ivory’s Shakespeare Wallah about a traveling theatrical troupe in colonial India, McQueen, a documentary of Lee Alexander McQueen who became the head designer of Givenchy at age 27 and won the British Designer of the Year Award four times, and Chef Flynn, about a ten year old chef who turned his living room into a supper club and took on the culinary world, www.greenwichfilm.org)
Local! Friday Night Moves at Armonk Library – June 1- 29:7pm: LIU Professor Valerie Franco offers a pair of horse and art movies and a French comedy of gender role reversal in June. Including the 2010 Secretariaton June 1 and Dark Horse, the 2016 Sundance Audience Award-winner that tells the true story of a bunch of working stiffs from Wales who breed a race horse to compete in the sport of kings on June 15. The art movies include The Line King(Albert Hirschfeld) on June 22 and Modigliani starring Andy Garcia on June 29. On June 8 she screens, I Am a Difficult Man, that delves into the mentality behind the advertising business, and how gender roles shape everything from bikini waxes to relationship gratification. Next to Normal, The Armonk Players, Whippoorwill Hall, NCPL – FRi-Sun, 6/1-3 & Thurs-Sat, 6/7-9: Next to Normal is an award-winning (see below) rock musical centering on a mother struggling with bipoloar disorder and the effects her illness has on her family. It has been called one of the best musicals of the 21st century. Nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2009, it won three (Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical) as well as the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming only the eighth musical in history to receive the honor. Humanitarian Awards Dinner, Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester, Birdstone Farm, Cross River – Fri, 6/1: TBA: BGCNW’s annual awards dinner to Board Member, volunteer and club writing seminar instructor Carolyn Quinn. The John Beach Award will be presented to award-winning choreographer, Peter Pucci, who has actively worked with local public schools and community college’s throughout his career. Beautiful Trail! Rockwood Ramble 10K, Rockefeller State Park, Sleepy Hollow – Sat, 6/2: 9am: This beautiful and challenging 10K course on carriage trails through Rockefeller State Park Preserve begins at Rockwood Hall overlooking the Hudson River. All proceeds benefit the park’s trail maintenance. This race features an accurate, wheel-measured course with results posted immediately after the race. Bicycle Sundays on the Bronx River Parkway, Sun, 6/3-24: 10am-2pm: Bicycle Sundays return on May 6. The Westchester Parks Foundation closes off a six and a half mile stretch of the Bronx River Parkway for the exclusive use of bicyclists, joggers, scooters and strollers. Becoming Tiffany: From Hudson Valley Painter to Gilded Age Tastemaker, Lyndhurst Mansion – Thurs-Mon, 6/7-9/24: This special exhibit of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany explores his origins as a painter in Irvington, his focus on important cultural movements, and his influence as a premiere tastemaker of the Gilded Age.The exhibition features pieces from the Lyndhurst collection and works on loan from major museums and rarely seen objects from private collections. Film buff Carol Durst screens Paul Thomas Anderson’s arresting drama of London dressmaker Reynold’s Woodcock that was nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards. Daniel Day Lewis, in his farewell role, creates a most odd character, an exacting artisan whose day can “seldom recover from a bad breakfast.” With star turns from Lesley Manville (his sister and business manager) and Vicky Krieps, his muse and expert mushroom forager.

Vanities, Hergenhan Center Armonk – Fri-Sat, 6/8-9: 8pm: Armonk’s Small Town Theatre Company presents a staged reading of Jack Heifner’s 1976 comedy that chronicles the lives of three high school cheerleaders from a small Texas town. The play spans the years 1963 to 1974 and follows the trio from HS to college sorority to New York City. Star Studded Film Series, Sabrina – Chappaqua Library, Sat, 6/23: 2pm: Historian and film librarian Phillip Harwood screens Billy Wilder’s 1954 romantic comedy, Sabrina, starring Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden. The film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2002. Sabrina was nominated for six Academy Awards and won one.
