Two Chappaqua students receive Harvey Tennis Award
Two Chappaqua students receive Harvey Tennis Award: The Harvey School has announced that Chappaqua residents Charlotte Levy and Ryan Villano are this year’s recipients of the John G. Davis Tennis Award. The pair will have their names inscribed on the memorial plaque honoring the 1950 Harvey alumnus whose father, Dwight Filley Davis, is credited with establishing the Davis Cup in professional tennis.
Named this spring as an HVAL All-League player for her first time, Levy was one of three junior co-captains on a team that went to the league championship match for the first time in program history. Playing in her third year on the varsity, Levy moved up from the No. 2 position to serve as the team’s No. 1 player during the season.
Levy’s singles victory in the HVAL semifinal helped Harvey edge Watkinson 4-3 to advance to the championship match where a tough Christian Heritage squad swept the Cavaliers to take the league title. Girls varsity coach, Harvey athletic director Patrick Kennedy, was pleased to select Levy as this year’s winner of the Davis Award. “Charlotte epitomizes the qualities that the award recognizes, a strong commitment to the game of tennis, loyalty to the team and good sportsmanship,” said coach Kennedy.
Villano, a freshman who has played on the varsity since seventh grade, was also an HVAL All-League selection this season. He made the leap from No. 5 last year to No. 1 this season, most often facing seniors who were the top players on opposing teams. Harvey boys varsity coach Tim Cornell said Villano was not only the team’s best player but also the one who best fits the criteria of the Davis Award. Coach Cornell said, “Ryan is dedicated to the game. He plays tennis all year long and gets coaching throughout the year. He also displays good sportsmanship on the court.”
Harvey’s tennis teams play their home matches on the school’s six outdoor hard courts named after the late John G. Davis ’50 who bequeathed funds to the school for their construction in 2016.
