Newman and Newman Play Bach in S. Salem’s Sanctuary Series: Acclaimed keyboardists, Anthony Newman and Mary Jane Newman, present the great preludes and fugues of J.S, Bach arranged for two pianos, plus two pieces performed on the pipe organ by Mr. Newman who is internationally renowned on the instrument. Labeled the “High Priest of Bach” by Wynton Marsalis, Anthony Newman, is considered by many to be America’s leading Bach specialist His wife, Sanctuary Series Artistic Director, Mary Jane Newman, herself an acclaimed pianist and organist, made her New York debut in 1986 in Lincoln Center’s “Great Performers” series at Alice Tully Hall. Since then she has appeared as soloist and conductor with orchestras, chamber ensembles and vocal groups throughout Europe, the U.S. and Israel.The piano transcriptions, made by Franz Xaver Gleichauf (1801-1856), are thought to have been created for Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn.
The Sanctuary Series enters it’s sixth year at the South Salem Presbyterian Church. Headed by Artistic Director Jane Newman and Chaired by Dean Travalino was designed to bring exceptional keyboard performances to the heart of the historic hamlet of South Salem.
In past years, The Sanctuary Series has presented renowned pianist Peter Serkin, a Grammy Award-winner at 19 who has collaborated with Yo Yo Ma; the 2016 International Classical Music Award-winner, Dmitry Levkovich; renowned cellist for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center – Carter Brey; Grammy-nominated pianist Andrius Žlabys, and Cipa and Misha Dichter who performed their four-handed piano program in S. Salem for an upcoming Carnegie Hall engagement.
