And 5 more that are Worth The Trip
MP Taverna, Irvington (Lunch & Dinner: Mon-Fri & Sun) We like the Fennel and “Burnt Bread” Soup with sweet sausage and lemon on Chef Michael Psilakis’s HVRW menu. But you don’t need a menu to put MP Teverna on your HVRW list. Psilakis’s modern approach to Greek cooking earned him a Food & Wine’s Best New Chef in 2008. A Bon Appetit and Esquire Magazine Chef of the Year, he’s been gracing magazine covers and doing guest appearances on TV every since. The owner of five restaurants including Kefi on Columbus Ave., he competed in the Food Network’s Chopped! All Stars Tournament in 2015. And this is one of our favorite restaurants. Read our review. Henry’s at the Farm, Milton (Lunch: Fri-Sat & Dinner: Mon-Sun) Henry’s really is at a farm, but more famously they are also at the Buttermilk Inn & Spa. A trip here made our What To Do: Bucket List. Before your meal you can stroll through the gardens and orchards or grab a drink and walk down to the river and say “this is what it’s all about.” Their often inventive New-American menu is sourced from local farms and purveyors and the large dining space has the feel of ski country. You can tie a trip to the Walkway Over the Hudson (6 miles away) to a lunch or dinner at Henry’s. Most importantly, while you are there, make sure you book a hot stone massage for after the holidays. They’re booking mid-January now. (220 North Road, Milton, 845.795.1500; www.buttermilkfallsinn.com)
Saltaire, Port Chester (Lunch: Wed-Sun & Dinner: Tues-Fri & Sun) The New York Times gave Les Barnes’ aquaculture emporium an Excellent rating. It’s another favorite of ours for its great industrial renovation in a cathedral ceilinged, hundred year old grain warehouse along the Byram River. And the fish happy menu, with a killer raw bar, is served there or at their cavernous bar/gastro pub that has a contemporary vibe. (55 Abendroth Ave., Port Chester, 914.939.2425; www.saltaireoysterbar.com)
The Roundhouse, Beacon (Dinner: Wed-Sat) It’s always worth the trip to The Roundhouse, Beacon to check out this waterfall view from your table. Tie your HVRW dinner to a trip to The Dia Beacon and make it a full afternoon and evening. Their HVRW menu includes Seafood Paella Croquettes with saffron tartar sauce, Codfish with white bean and chorizo ragout with clam chowder sauce and a Chocolate Jar filled with dark chocolate brownies, milk chocolate mousse and white chocolate-cranberry fudge. Sweet! (2 E. Main St., Beacon, 845-765-8369; www.roundhousebeacon.com)
Union Restaurant and Bar Latino, Haverstraw, (Lunch & Dinner: Tues-Sun) This Haverstraw hacienda from innovative El Salvadorean chef, David Martinez, was a perennial Zagats top tenner. (Remember Zagats?) When they opened in 2010, The New York Times called their innovative Latin fusion menu “refined comfort food.” Their HVRW menu includes a Ginger Carrot Soup, and an Ahi Tuna Yakitori with a white sesame seed crust, Shitaki mushroom, corn salsa and Yakitori sauce. (22-24 New Main St., Haverstraw, 845.429.4354; www.unionrestaurant.net)
