Tim Prentice: After The Mobile at The Aldrich Museum: After the Mobile, is a two-part solo exhibition by Connecticut artist Tim Prentice (b. 1930). Prentice, known for his innovative work in the field of motion in sculpture, tips his hat in the title of this exhibition to Alexander Calder who adopted the term at the urging of Marcel Duchamp to describe his balanced, moving wind-driven constructions.
Prentice’s moving sculptures builds on the traditions of Calder’s playful mobiles and George Rickey’s minimalist kinetic sculptures. Prentice is recognized for his ability to create sensuous and beautiful experiences out of hard, industrial materials. His systems of bent wire and metal or plastic planes are sensitive to moving air but quite robust. While they relent to the wind’s force, they always recover, their motion revealing the rippling and fluid patterns of moving air.
Prentice’s work is informed by his former career as an architect though he has dedicated himself to creating art since 1970. The artist and his assistants construct the works themselves, constantly hand-tinkering with the wire structures allowing for experimentation. All of the work is created with simple hand tools that one might find in a basement workshop.
After The Mobile will feature twenty indoor works, five outdoor works, and a video portrait of the artist, presented both in the Museum’s galleries and Sculpture Garden. The indoor exhibition will be on view from March 29 to October 4, 2021, and the outdoor installation on view from September 19, 2021 to April 24, 2022.
