Sounds of Summer Music Series at JBFC
Sounds of Summer at JBFC
The Jacob Burns Film Center’s annual Sounds of Summer film series serves up 18 movies where music is the star. Featuring music from electronic music to soul, New Orleans Jazz to Progressive Rock, Doo-wop to Hip Hop.
The bread and butter for the series is a broad array of documentaries highlighted by Albert and David Maysles 1964 What’s Happening: The Beatles in the USA; Kenny Vance’s Heart and Soul featuring interviews with the Chantels, Frankie Lymon, Little Anthony and the Imperials and the Jive Five; King Crimson, David Crosby, Ryuichi Sakamoto and more.
And there are some concert films that will light up your summer, such as Prince’s 1987 Sign o’ The Times; Carol King’s 1973 “Home Again” concert in Central Park, and Soul Power, a concert doc covering a multi-day music festival with B.B. King, The Spinners, Miriam Makeba and James Brown.
Perhaps the most fun in JBFC’s Sounds of Summer are the narrative features where music and musicians take center stage. Such as The Mambo Kings with Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas, Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid with Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson, and the bio-pic Selena about Selena Quintanilla, the Queen of Tejano music – starring Jennifer Lopez.
