Worth the Trip: Best Menus HVRW
Le Jardin Du Roi, Chappaqua: New Castle’s yeoman French bistro, Le Jardin Du Roi’s HVRW menu (and this photo of their Crab Hush Puppy) packed a pop for us this year. Is there something prosaic about a mid-week dinner of escargot and lobster stew for $44.95? Crab Hush Puppy and Coq Au Vin? Or maybe French Onion Soup and Mussels & Fries – with white wine, curry cream or saffron cream. Throw in a dairy/gluten free seafood chowder, NY strip steak over wild mushroom risotto. Bread pudding, brownie a la mode or crepe du jour for dessert and I think not. (95 King Street, Chappaqua, 914-238-1368, www.lejardinchappaqua.com.)
Il Cenacolo, Newburgh: Celebrate the simplicity of Tuscan cuisine with Il Cenacolo’s HVRW menu that starts for us with the Burrata Con Funghi in Padella (milky mozzarella with sauteed oyster and shitake mushrooms) and the Ravioli al Funghetto (spinach and ricotta in a mushroom puree sauce.) There’s also Fettucini with Dungeness Crab, Rigatoni Bolognese with ground filet mignon, Maple Leaf Breast of Duck, Grilled Rack of Lamb, Red Snapper and a dessert menu that will make your head spin. (228 S. Plank Road, Newburgh, 845-564-4494, ilcenacolorestaurant.com.)
La Casa Bronxville: If you thing we’re going to publish a Best HVRW Menus without a tres leches cake – ha! Chef Victor “Erik” Lopez’s airy elevated Mexican offers a simple proposition for HVRW. Start with Guacamole and house made chips and choose from eight entrees. Including, Carne Asada, Salmon a la Plancha, Shrimp a la Diabla, Blackened Mahi Mahi, Pork Pozole, and Chicken Enchiladas or Enmoladas. And then the Tres Leches. Or flan, churros, or cashew cheesecake. (7 Pondfield Rd., Bronxville, 914-222-9016, lacasabronxville.com)
The Vintage at The Millbrook Inn, Millbrook: You know you’re dealing with a confident Hudson Valley Farm to Table chef when you see an HVRW menu with no choices. Just one selection per course. Namely, their Spring Pea and Radish Salad with lemony anchovie drizzle, a Deconstructed Chicken Pot Pie filled with spring veg with white wine and thyme, and Rhubarb Crumble for dessert. That comes with vanilla bean ice cream and pistachio dust. (3 Gifford Rd., Millbrook, 845-605-1121, www.themillbrookinn.com)
Red Horse By David Burke, White Plains: Somebody’s going to have to knock Chef David Burke off our HVRW Best Menus list and until then – he’s in! David Burke, the only American to ever secure the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France Diplome d’Honneur, once again delivers his Lobster Dumplings and Bison Short Ribs with Chow Fun Noodles on the menu. We had both and loved them. There’s also a Seared Ginger Black Pepper Asparagus and Shrimp Risotto and Steak Frites for an $8 up-charge. For dessert, choose from the Key Lime Pie, Creme Brulée, Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake or Jasmine Macerated Fruit and Berries. (221 Main St. White Plains, (914) 467-5713; redhorsebydb.com)
Goosefeather at the Tarrytown House Estate: Another fall repeat comes from Chef Talde, a James Beard nominee and Iron Chef competitor who was recently seen knocking off Boston legend Chef Karen Akunowicz on the Food Networks Tournament of Champions. His inauthentic Asian in the King Mansion at the Tarrrytown House Estate is always fin and a flavor bomb. And guess who just had his Crispy Shrimp Boa with pickled daikon, cabbage and General Tso’s sauce; his Wild Mushroom Slippery Noodle with seasonal veg and shaved hazelnut, and his Winter Citrus Mochi Waffle with yuzu custard and white chocolate ice cream – for an arm and a leg more than $44.95? See how Chef Talde rolls at HVRW. (49 E. Sunnyside Lane, Tarrytown, 914-829-5454; goosefeatherny.com)
