Audra McDonald To Open The Caramoor Summer Festival 2023
Six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald accompanied by the St. Luke’s Chamber Orchestra will open the Caramoor Summer Festival on June 17. The festival will conclude on August 6 with the St. Luke’s Chamber Orchestra and Alisa Weilerstein. These events bookend Caramoor’s summer season that features 40 days and nights of live musical performances in orchestral, chamber, jazz, American roots, the Great American Songbook, Global music and opera.
Highlights at The Venetian Theater
Some of the highlights of the Caramoor season that will perform at their grand Venetian Theater will feature the baroque opera Alcina from Francesca Caccini; the Grammy-nominated Sandbox Percussion who will perform an 11-part chamber music work from composer Andy Akiho; Over the Rainbow: Tony Award-winning Music Director Ted Sperling’s The Works of Harold Arlen featuring Mikaela Bennett (The Golden Apple), Aisha de Haas (Disney’s Newsies), Julie Benko (Funny Girl), and Nicholas Ward (The Music Man); and the Malian “songbird of Wassoulou” Oumou Sangaré, and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Classical Music Highlights & Two All-Day Music Fests
Classical Music highlights in the Venetian Theater include the Orchestra of St. Luke’s with Hélène Grimaud; Conrad Tao (piano) and tap dancer Caleb Teicher; The Knights with Pekka Kuusisto; and Garrick Ohlsson (piano). Additionally, The Westchester Symphonic Winds with Curt Ebersole (conductor) will present Caramoor’s traditional Independence Day celebration Pops & Patriots. New This Year
New this year is a mini-series of recitals in the Rosen House Music Room for those who can’t get enough classical music. And a three-part Music & Meditation series in Caramoor’s Sunken Garden featuring classical music duos and Meditation Coach Jennifer Llewellyn. The full schedule is on our What To Do Calendar. Finally, Caramoor has programmed three more casual Concerts on the Lawn in August after their official summer season concludes – called it an “after-party.” They include Balún (Caribbean Rhythms), Michael Olatuja: Lagos Pepper Soup (Afrobeat), and singer-songwriter Neal Francis who, according to Rolling Stones Magazine, “is making piano rock cool again.”
