Free Local Music! Chappaqua-Millwood Chamber of Commerce Summer Concerts, FDR Drive, Wed, 8/1: 7pm: Dance band FDR Drive, mainstays at The Heights at Brother Vic’s in South Salem, play a mix of music that includes current dance Hits, Motown, R&B, 70s, 80’s, 90’s, Rock, Pop Hits, Swing, novelty songs and standards. Free Jazz! Lyndhurst’s Sunset Jazz Concerts, John Marshall Quintet feat. Grant Stewart, Thurs, 8/2: 6pm: Vocalist, trumpeter and flugelhornist, John Marshall played with the WDR Big Band and has released eight CDs. Tenor saxophonist Grant Stewart has released sixteen recordings and was voted a “rising star on the tenor” in the Downbeat Critic’s Poll. (635 South Broadway, Tarrytown: www.lyndhurst.org)
Sand Castle Contest, Glen Island Beach – Sat, 8/4: 12-4pm: Get your team of sand architects, engineers and contractors together and start building. Or just stop by to get some sand between your toes and watch all the Type A Beach Personalities construct their watchtowers, moats and flanking towers. Plus deejay music and beach games. Hoops for Health, Mental Health Association of Westchester & NY Liberty Box Out Stigma, County Center – Wed, 8/8: 6pm: The NY Liberty take on the LA Sparks at 7pm. Prior to the game there will be a panel discussion promoting emotional wellness among young adults and athletes with Stephen Smith PHD MHA Westchester, Sue Wicks, former NY Liberty player and pioneer in LGBT rights and Michel Orth, Westchester County Commissioner of Mental Health. Lyndhurst’s Sunset Jazz Concerts, Rodney Green Quartet, Thurs, 8/9: 6pm: Drummer Rodney Green toured with Christian McBride, Diana Krall, Eric Reed, Tom Harrell, and Joe Henderson all before the age of 20. Free Local Music! 1 Stop Pony Band, Summer Concerts at Wampus Brook Park – Sat, 8/11: 8pm: Brian La Blanc and band captures the voices of some of the most iconic musicians and prolific hit-makers including Billy Joel, The Doors, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, John Lennon, Neil Young, and Jimmy Buffett. Spirit of the Sound Lighthouse Cruise Central – Sat, 7/28, 8/11 & 9/8: The Norwalk Aquarium’s Spirit of the Sound catamaran’s Lighthouse’s Cruises visits century old beacons from Sands Point to New Haven Ct. The Central Sound cruise takes in five lighthouses on it’s 5 hour tour. The Western Sound cruise visits 7 historic lighthouses on it’s seven hour tour. Check times. (10 N. Cash & Country Music Festival + NY Whiskey Weekend, Warwick – Sat-Sun, 8/11-12: 12-5pm: Sample spirits from 17 NY craft distillers including Brooklyn Gin, Standard Spirits and Black Dirt Distillery at this Johnny Cash & Country Music Festival at the Warwick Valley Winery. Free Jazz! Lyndhurst’s Sunset Jazz Concerts, Marianne Solivan Quartet, Thurs, 8/16: 6pm: Solivan has made a name for herself as a hard-swinging, passionate, vocalist with a commanding stage presence. Local! Third Thursday Celebration Circus Arts, Downtown Armonk – Thurs, 8/17: 5-9pm: The Armonk Chamber of Commerce’s Third Thursday Celebrations conclude with an evening of street circus performances and hands on demos where kids can learn how to walk the tightrope, spin plates, stilt-walk, juggle and hula hoop. There will be live music by the School of Rock House Band and Vinyl Countdown and special promotions and discounts from retailers and eateries all around town. www.armonkchamberofcommerce
An Evening with Rooney Mara & Carol Screening, Bedford Playhouse – Sat, 8/18: 7pm: Go for the screening of Carol, the 2015 film from Todd Haynes, based on a Patricia Highsmith novel, about a forbidden affair in 1950s Manhattan starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.) Stay for the discussion with Rooney and moderator Patricia Morrisroe after the flick. “Goin’ where the water tastes like wine…” Grateful Dead Tribute Concert at the Warwick Valley Winery – Sat- Sun, 8/18-19: 12-5pm: A $12 ticket ($15 at the door) will get you into this Dead Fest at the Warwick Valley Winery & Black Dirt Distillery. Hudson Valley Rib Fest, New Paltz –Fri-Sun, 8/18-20: check times: 60 rib masters compete for the NY State BBQ Championship while you sample ribs and sides from BBQ to Mexican and Jamaican and listen to the sounds of Indie rockers, boogie & blues and country star Jessica Lynn more. Scottish Tattoo Party, Schoolhouse Theater – Sat, 8/18: 5-9pm: Okay, so there’s no real mention of tattoos at this event. But there’s music, standup comedy, dancing, bagpipes, food and flights of whiskey – so what the heck! This fundraiser for the Schoolhouse Theater sold out last year and the guest list is limited to 100 – so if you’re intrigued, bet your tickets today! Free Jazz! Lyndhurst’s Sunset Jazz Concerts, Brian Q. Torff & New Duke, Thurs, 8/23: 6pm: Brian Q. Torff is a renowned bassist, composer, author and a professor at Fairfield University. New Rochelle Opera: Bernstein & Friends, Summer Concerts at Wampus Brook Park – Sat, 8/25: 8pm: The New Rochelle Opera celebrates the 100th Birthday of Leonard Bernstein by performing many of his Broadway songs in their “Bernstein and Friends” program. Public Sails on the Schooner Soundwaters – Fri-Sun, 6/30 – 8/5: check times: Board the 80’ Tall Schooner Soundwaters, the ship that Pete Seeger made famous, for a two-hour afternoon journey on the Long Island Sound. The Schooner Soundwaters, seats 40 and sails from Boccuzzi Park in Stamford. Sunset sails are also offered on Friday and Saturday nights and Fireworks Sails on Wed, 7/4 & Sat, 7/7. Brand-New & Terrific: Alex Katz in the 1950s, Neuberger Museum – Wed – Sun, 7/1-10/14: This exhibit organized by Colby College presents 60 works from Alex Katz, whose brightly colored, flat, recognizable, figurative works of everyday scenes of middle class life was a response to the Abstract Expressionism that dominated the art scene in the 1950s. By reintroducing and reinterpreting the figure, Katz opened the door for the subsequent Pop Art movement. (735 Anderson Hill Rd., Purchase College; www.neuberger.org)
The Taming of the Shrew,Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Boscobel – Thurs, 6/7 – Fri, 8/24: check dates & times: With its breathtaking views of the Hudson River, Boscobel provides a world-class setting for summer Shakespeare and picnicking. Here their a critically acclaimed troupe, takes on William Shakespeare’s comedy about the shrewish Kate, her sister Bianca and Petruchio the gold-digger. Richard II, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Boscobel – Sat, 6/9 – Sun, 8/26: check dates & times: Here Artistic Director Davis McCallum assembles a huge cast of HVSF’s finest for their first ever production of Shakespeare’s historic drama of the absolute ruler Richard and how he splits his kingdom in two by banishing his cousins Henry Bolingbroke. Editor’s Choice? Andy Warhol: Subject and Seriality, Neuberger Museum, Pens Sun, 7/22, runs Wed – Sun through 12/23: This new exhibit, organized by The Neuberger Museum, examines Warhol’s method of repeating images of his subjects in various and multiple ways – concurrently and across time, and in diverse media. Included are the artist’s prints, photographs, and multiples, created between the 1960s and 1980s, that come from the Neuberger Museum of Art’s own collection and those of four other Hudson Valley museums, and various galleries and foundations.
Anything Goes, Westchester Broadway Theatre – Thurs, 7/5- Sun, 9/9: Anything Goes,winner of three 2011 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival is considered one of the greatest Tap Dancing musicals of all time. There’s romance and laughter in this story about a nightclub singer, a stowaway and Public Enemy No. 13 on a transatlantic luxury liner. Pride of the Hudson River Cruise, Newburg – Through 10/28: 1 & 4pm: See the majestic beauty of the Hudson River on this 2-hour narrated river adventure from Newburgh to West Point taking in the sights of Washington’s Headquarters, World’s End, Mt. Sheffield Island Lighthouse Cruises, Norwalk Harbor – Through 9/28: 11am, 2 & 3:30pm: Board the 45-foot C.J. Essex Steam Train & Riverboat Ride, Daily 6/17-8/27, Weekends 9/1-10/22: Take a 2 ½ hour narrated train and riverboat ride through what the Nature Conservancy calls “one of the last great places on earth,” the Connecticut River Valley. The train passes farms, waterfalls, and wetland habitats with blue heron and egrets. The riverboat cruise on the Connecticut River passes the historic Gillette Castle, Goodspeed Opera House and Haddam Swing Bridge. Lyndhurst Mansion Tours, Tarrytown – Thurs-Mon, 5/4-9/24: 10am-4pm: Take a one-hour guided tour of the historic Lyndhurst mansion overlooking the Hudson River. The Gothic Revival mansion has been used as a movie set for six major motion pictures including House of Dark Shadows (1970), Reversal of Fortune (1990), Cradle Will Rock (1999) and Winter’s Tale (2013).
