Empty Bowls was started in the early 90s by high school students in Bloomfield Hills, MI and has since been replicated by communities worldwide that raise money and awareness in the fight to end hunger. Communities work together to create handmade bowls and in exchange for a cash donation are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In addition to the bowls created by local residents, Chappaqua Cares has solicited celebrity bowls for the occasion including a signed bowl from Pharell Williams that will be auctioned off at the event.
Chappaqua Cares is a 501C organization with a mission to connect local philanthropic organizations with area residents who want to help with fundraising, donation drives and other volunteer activities. Their partners include The Mount Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry, The Pleasantville Cottage School, the Community Center of Northern Westchester, Open Door Family Medical Center and the Horace Greeley Scholarship Fund among others. It was founded by Chappaqua residents Dawn Greenberg and Jessica Reinmann. Dawn is also the founder of the Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival. Jessica is the founder of The Great Chappaqua Bake Sale that raises money for Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign.
