Neuberger Museum Online: Isaac Julien and Louise Yelin: Neuberger Museum of Art’s webinar, “In Conversation Artist Talk,” features British filmmaker and installation artist Isaac Julien and Louise Yelin, Purchase College professor emerita of literature. The two will discuss Julien’s Western Union: Small Boats, a video installation that addresses migration across the Mediterranean from Africa to Europe, in the early years of the 21st century.
The work has received dozens of accolades and awards. It powerfully evokes the trauma of clandestine passage – what it means to journey illegally from one place to another, from one culture to another. Western Union opened at the Neuberger Museum on February 12. (The Museum is now closed.)
Julien, who will be connecting from London, will discuss his work and how his multi-screen film installations and photographs incorporate different artistic disciplines to create a poetic and unique visual language.
According to Dr. Yelin who co-curated the installation with Helaine Posner, the Museum’s Chief Curator, “Western Union, like all of Julien’s work, uses brilliant images to tell an often-chilling tale. Using unusal visual techniques, Julien presents multiple points of view on migration, contrasting the migrants’ perspectives and those on shore who await their arrival.”
