Sanctuary Series South Salem presents Michael Brown, Playing with Tradition: Winner of the 2018 Emerging Artist Award from Lincoln Center and a 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Brown has performed as soloist with leading orchestras throughout the U.S. and given recitals at Carnegie Hall. His own compositions are noted for interweaving the classics with his own compositions. Here he performs his own Surfaces (2016) as well as Haydn’s Fantasia (Capriccio) in C Major, HOB. XVII:4 and works by Debussy and Ravel.

More about Michael Brown

Michael Brown has been described as “one of the leading figures in the current renaissance of performer-composers” (The New York Times). His unique artistry is reflected in his creative approach to programming, which often interweaves the classics and his own compositions. He was selected by András Schiff to perform on an international solo tour making debuts in Berlin, Milan, Florence, and Zurich’s Tonhalle. Brown is also an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, performing frequently at Alice Tully Hall and on tour.

More About the Sanctuary Series

The Sanctuary Series enters it’s sixth year at the South Salem Presbyterian Church. Headed by Artistic Director Jane Newman and Chaired by Dean Travalino was designed to bring exceptional keyboard performances to the heart of the historic hamlet of South Salem.

In past years, The Sanctuary Series has presented renowned pianist Peter Serkin, a Grammy Award-winner at 19 who has collaborated with Yo Yo Ma; the 2016 International Classical Music Award-winner, Dmitry Levkovich; renowned cellist for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center – Carter Brey; Grammy-nominated pianist Andrius Žlabys, and Cipa and Misha Dichter who performed their four-handed piano program in S. Salem for an upcoming Carnegie Hall engagement.
