The Sanctuary Series: Holiday Concert with The Newmans
Acclaimed keyboardists, Anthony Newman and Mary Jane Newman, present two of the great Preludes and Fugues of J.S. Bach arranged for two pianos made by Franz Xaver Gleichauf (1801-1856) and thought to have been created for Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn and two Fantasias of WA Mozart originally composed for mechanical organ housed in a lock and adapted from the earliest arrangements for piano duet published a few years after Mozart’s death. In addition, Mr. Newman performs Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in E-flat major (built upon the hymn “St. Anne”) on the pipe organ, an instrument for which he is internationally renowned.
Labeled the “High Priest of Bach” by Wynton Marsalis, Anthony Newman is considered by many to be America’s leading Bach specialist. His wife, Sanctuary Series Artistic Director, Mary Jane Newman, herself an acclaimed pianist and organist, made her New York debut in 1986 in Lincoln Center’s “Great Performers” series at Alice Tully Hall. Since then, she has appeared as soloist and conductor with orchestras, chamber ensembles and vocal groups throughout Europe, the U.S. and Israel.
