The Universal Monster Sequels Triple Feature
Jacob Burns’ scaled down and limited capacity version of their Halloween Movie Marathon zeroes on three of the best sequels of Universal Monster films. Universal Pictures who gave us Bela Lugosi as Dracula and Lon Chaney Jr. as the Wolf Man has a deeper stable of monster greats including The Invisible Man, The Creature and the Bride of Frankenstein. AND these sequels.
The Invisible Man Returns
In this 1940 sci-fi h0rror sequel Vincent Price portrays the titular Invisible Man, subbing for the great Claude Rains who starred in the original. Price plays Sir Geoffrey Radcliffe, a man on death row after being wrongfully convicted of murdering his brother. Radcliffe convinces Dr. Frank Griffin (John Sutton), the brother of Claude Raines’ Dr. Jack Griffin, to turn him invisible so he can escape from prison and track down the real killer. Price goes into overdrive when the serum drives him mad, quickly reminding us why he was one of the best to ever play in the world of horror.
Revenge of The Creature
This sequel to Jack Arnold’s 1954 classic, Creature from the Black Lagoon, the “Gill Man” is captured, brought into captivity, studied, and trained by adoring scientists only to escape and terrorize the town in a cautionary tale a la King Kong and Jurassic Park on the dangers of trying to domesticate and commercialize dangerous monsters.
Bride of Frankenstein
The most seen out of all the Universal Monster sequels, and possibly one of the most seen Universal Monster movies period: James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein film sequel surpassed the original in quality. Boris Karloff returns as The Monster and Colin Clive as Dr. Henry Frankenstein. In “Bride” Dr. Frankenstein creates a mate for the Monster and things , unsurprisingly perhaps, do not go according to plan when mayhem ensues.
