Washington on the Hudson Boscobel: The Battle of Stony Point Military Reenactment Day: General George Washington will inspect his troops as the grounds at Boscobel come alive with military re-enactors. Then there-enactors will form authentic encampments from the American Revolution and the Civil War throughout the West Meadow. Wealthy Loyalists built Boscobel between 1804 and 1808. By the 1950s, it fell into disrepair and was demolished. Preservationists saved as many architectural fragments as possible and reassembled them fifteen miles north. There they restored the Neoclassical mansion to its original grandeur.
Now an esteemed Historic House Museum it contains one of the finest collections of decorative arts from the Federal period. Boscobel offers tours of its Neoclassical mansion and 68 acres of grounds, lush gardens and a woodland trail. Located in the heart of the Hudson Valley, Boscobel overlooks Constitution Marsh and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Consequently it showcases dramatic views of the Hudson River.
Open from Wednesday through Monday from mid-April to December. It hosts special events, exhibitions, talks by top design experts, and programs and activities for families. Children are always welcome.
During the summer, Boscobel is home to the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (HVSF). The troupe is widely acclaimed for their innovative and accessible takes on the Bard. The Drama League nominated their 2015 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Outstanding Revival. As a result, The Pearl Theater Company on NYC’s 42nd Street picked up the production for aits off-Broadway run..
Another standout recognition for HVSF came in 2016 when The New York Times named HVSF one it America’s 50 Essential Summer Festivals. Significantly, the list also includes Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, the Newport Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart, Charleston’s Spoleto Festival, California’s Ojai Festival, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Beckett, MA and the Grand Teton Music Festival set at the foot of the Grand Tetons.
