Fireworks Cancellations
Fireworks Cancellations: We reported yesterday that Westchester County Independence Day Fireworks celebrations will return this year to Kensico Dam and Playland Park. LoHud reported the same. Subsequent to this reporting, one of our faithful readers emailed us that the Kensico Dam Independence Day Music Fest featuring Big Band music and a fireworks celebration will not be happening – this from someone at Westchester Recreation.
We contacted Westchester Recreation and were told “we’re still trying to work that out. We’ll get back to you.” Which leaves us firmly in mid-air. LoHud released an updated version of their Westchester Fireworks celebration article this morning which had no mention of either the Kensico Dam or the Playland Park Independence weekend fireworks.
We contacted the LoHud reporter who reported difficulty in getting information about the fireworks throughout their reporting process including lots of outdated information from individual towns. She told us that she “heard from someone at the DOT today that the police are saying Kensico’s are not going to happen.” But no actual confirmation which I suspect is why LoHud’s article did not specifically report the Kensico and Playland events as cancelled.
Since we haven’t heard back from Westchester Recreation since early this morning we have removed the calendar listing for this event from our site as there currently is no affirmation that this event will happen. We will reinstate it if need be.
Similarly information about Playland Park’s Independence Day Fireworks have vanished from their site. Which now indicates that fireworks celebrations will resume on July 9 at 9:15pm and run every Friday through September 3. So we have officially removed the July 4 calendar listing for this event.
Pound Ridge Cancelled
Finally, we reported that the Pound Ridge Independence Day Fireworks celebration will return this year however we have now confirmed with the town’s Supervisor of Recreation that the event was recently cancelled. He told us the cancellation was due to CDC Guidelines which allows up to 5000 socially distanced people at an outdoor event. The Town cancelled the event because they only have room to socially distance 1000 people and the event regularly attracts 2,000 to 3,000. We regret this reporting error yesterday though we checked the website and there was no mention of a cancellation of this event that was reported on the Pound Ridge Recreation Spring Summer catalog. We subsequently found a message in a Town Supervisor email regrading re-scheduling the event for August 7. And we have posted this event in our calendar for that date. We have since remedied our line of communications with the town.
So where can you see Fireworks?
Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck. Sleepy Hollow. Port Chester and the Yonkers Waterfront. Also Jones Beach.
And, of course the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks in Manhattan where there will be viewing stands on FDR Drive at East 23rd, 34th and 42nd Streets for vaccinated people. No-vaxers can find space in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan waterfronts.
