The Green Knight stars Dev Patel as Sir Gawain.
Stillwater is the highly anticipated thriller from the Academy Award-winning director Tom McCarthy of Spotlight. It stars Matt Damon as an oil-rigger from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter, who is in prison for murder. And follows his efforts to exonerate her for a crime she claims she did not commit.
Sounds of Summer Series Continues at JBFC
Also playing through August 31 for the general population is JBFC’s popular Sounds of Summer Series. Sounds of Summer features documentaries covering a wide range of musical genres including jazz, folk, soul and classic rock. The lineup for the week of July 27 includes Amazing Grace showcasing prime footage of Aretha Franklin from 1972, Jonathan Demme’s acclaimed documentary Neil Young: Heart of Gold, and Shut UP and Play the Hits: The Very Loud Ending of LCD Soundsystem – showcasing what was anticipated to be the band’s final performance ever at Madison Square Garden.
The Sounds of Summer August lineup includes no less than three docs where Bob Dylan plays a featured role. Including D.A. Pennebaker’s heralded Don’t Look Back; The Festival about the famous Newport Jazz Festival where Dylan went electric and was soundly booed by folk fans; and The Last Waltz, Scorcese’s concert film of The Band’s final performance. That’s one more for Dylan than for The Grateful Dead who will be featured in their independently produced The Grateful Dead Movie circa 1974 and the full-length Long Strange Trip from award-winning filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev (Happy Valley, The Tillman Story).
Plus Wattstax, often referred to as The Black Woodstock with performances from Isaac Hayes, Albert King, Rufus and Carla Thomas, the Staple Singers, the Emotions, and the Bar-Kays. Rounding out the series is The Talking Head’s concert film Stop Making Sense, Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary, Jimi Plays Woodstock, and The Wrecking Crew – about the studio musicians who backed The Beach Boys, Phil Spector, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Sonny & Cher, Elvis, The Monkees on their most successful albums of the 1960s and 70s.
