Grammy-winners lead PAC’s Spotlight on Mexico: The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College’s 2019-20 season features a four-part series on the music and dance of Mexico. From Flamenco and Mariachi to contemporary Mexican music and ballet, Pac’s Spotlight on Mexico features Grammy stalwarts Javier Limón, Mariachi Los Comperos and more.
Flamenco Legends by Javier Limón: The Paco de Lucia Project, Performing Arts Center Purchase, Sun, 10/20: 3pm: Paco de Lucía was widely considered to be the world’s premier flamenco guitarist and Spain’s greatest musical export. He died more than three years ago, leaving behind an immense impact on flamenco music. Now members of his last touring band, led by guitarist-producer and 10-time Latin Grammy® winner Javier Limón, hit the road as the Flamenco Legends, revisiting the late guitarist’s music and honoring his legacy while paving a new path into the future of flamenco. Villalobos Brothers, Performing Arts Center Purchase, Sat., 2/8: 8pm: Contemporary and high-octane, The Villalobos Brothers redefine contemporary Mexican music. Their original compositions blend elements of jazz, rock, classical, and Mexican folk. In 2018, they joined forces with Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra for “Fandango at the Wall.” This ambitious undertaking, produced by Kabir Sehgal, united legendary international musicians for a live concert at the Tijuana-San Diego border wall, and resulted in an album and documentary film to be released in 2019. Ballet Folclorico Nacional de Mexico Silvia Lozano, Performing Arts Center Purchase, Sat, 3/14: 8pm: Immerse yourself in the rich colors and sounds of Mexico through an evening of authentic dance and music with the internationally recognized Ballet Folclórico Nacional de México Silvia Lozano. This innovative and theatrical group of dancers’ spectacular performances reflect the work of Mexico’s leading researchers and practitioners of folklore, dance, music, and costumes. Mariachi Los Camperos, Performing Arts Center Purchase, Fri., 3/20: 8pm: America’s favorite mariachi ensemble brings their solid-gold Mexican sound to Purchase. Acclaimed by audiences at Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and other major American venues, these two-time Grammy Award-winners perform skillfully arranged versions of classic mariachi melodies and regiona mariachi music featuring full-throated harmonies and festive pageantry.
