Help Save Four Wild Horse Herds
Help Save Four Wild Horse Herds: Bobbie Meyzen, a long-time friend of What To Do and proprietor of La Crémaillère restaurant in Banksville, was recently appointed the Northeast Regional Director of the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros (ISPMB). She sent us this urgent plea for donations to help protect four rare wild horse herds. We pass it on to our readers here:
“Today in Lantry, South Dakota, four wild horse herds are facing winter without their winter hay supply. The snow will be flying by the end of the week and funding is urgently needed.
I’m hoping that you might be able to help with a donation to this wonderful organization, International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros (ISPMB). Here are some highlights of their accomplishments.
ISPMB is the oldest wild horse and burro organization and is responsible for the passage of the 1971 Wild Horses and Burros Act which protects wild horses and burros; otherwise, there would be no wild horses or burros left in our country for future generations to enjoy.
They created the concept of the adoption program given to the BLM in 1976 and initiated the move to raise the penalties for killing wild horses/burros from $2,000 to $100,000.
Currently, ISPMB has 16 years of comprehensive behavioral studies completed on their herds and has created a proven model for effectively managing wild horses. ISPMB assembled a team of top equine behavioral scientists and veterinarians to assist them in 2014. Population growth studies completed this year show that ISPMB’s herds grow at 7% to 8% as compared to the US Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management’s projections of 20%. This finding is of critical importance and could create a revolutionary change in the management of government herds, stopping unnecessary disruptions and helicopter roundups.
The work they do is vital to the future of all wild horses in our country and I hope you will support them. Just $50 will feed one wild horse for one month. $300 feed one wild horse for six months. $25,000 feeds four herds for one month and $150,000 feeds four herds for six months.
