Worth The Trip
Aroma Osteria – Wappinger’s Falls (Lunch: Tues-Sat & Dinner: Tues – Fri & Sun) One of the highest rated Italian restaurants in the Hudson Valley turns out “decadent” Southern Italian classics in a rustic setting set on a hill off Rt. 9 in Wappinger’s Falls. There’s lots of pastas with pork ragu, wild mushrooms and fennel sausage on the HVRW menu along with a pork loin with sweet & sour vinegar peppers and a Branzino. But the Torta Caprese (chocolate almond cake with vanilla bean gelato) is raising our eyebrows. (114 Old Post Rd., Wappinger’s Falls, 845.298.6790; www.aromaosteriarestaurant.com)
Bocuse – Hyde Park: (Lunch & Dinner: Tues – Sat) HVRW is a great excuse to get up to the Culinary Institute of America. CIA’s French restaurant Bocuse is our choice this year as Ristorante Caterina de’ Medici will black out Saturdays. Named after France’s most famous chef, Paul Bocuse, this CIA standout reimagines classic French cuisine through modern cooking techniques. And it’s gorgeous. For a rendezvous with history check out the FDR Museum while you are there. (1946 Campus Dr., (Rt. 9) Hyde Park; www.ciarestaurants.com)
BLT Steakhouse – White Plains: (Dinner: Mon-Thurs & Sun) It’s a chain, but what steakhouse outside of NYC isn’t, and the steaks are great. The popovers they bring before the meal are HUGE and a real treat, and check out the decor and windows! Located in the Ritz Carlton, if you’ve never been here’s your chance to save a couple of bucks at this gorgeous and otherwise pricey White Plains steakhouse. (221 Main St., White Plains, 914.467.5500; www.bltrestaurants.com)
Butterfield at Hasbrouck House, Stone Ridge: (Dinner: Wed-Sun, Brunch: Sat-Sun: Chef Aaron Abramson took the helm at the restaurant of this luxury hotel this spring. His pedigree runs deep with stints at the James Beard Award-winning The Willows on Lummi Island, WA, Noma Copenhagen, World’s Best Restaurant winner in 2014 and Dan Barber’s Blue Hill at Stone Barns. If you’re not up for the hour and a half ride from Armonk, get a room and a couples massage at this romantic retreat while you are there. (3805 Main St., Stone Ridge, 845.687.0887; www.hasbrouckhouseny.com)
MP Taverna – Irvington (Lunch & Dinner: Mon-Fri & Sun) Chef Michael Psilakis’s (a Bon Appetit and Esquire Magazine Chef of the Year) HVRW menu made our Best Menu’s HVRW Fall 2017 list. Since he hasn’t listed his menu yet, we’re moving him over to Worth The Trip. His modern approach to Greek cooking earned him a Food & Wine’s Best New Chef in 2008 and he’s been gracing magazine covers and doing guest appearances on TV every since. The owner of five restaurants including Kefi on Columbus Ave. and MP Tavernas in Irvington, Roslyn and Astoria he competed in the Food Network’s Chopped! All Stars Tournament in 2015. (1 Bridge St., Irvington, 914.231.7854; www.michaelpsilakis.com)
Red Hat on the River, Irvington: Lunch: Mon-Fri & Dinner: Mon-Fri & Sun. We just added Red Hat to our What To Do Bucket List for their modern take on French bistro in an industrial setting with double height ceilings, near floor-to-ceiling, white, wood-frame windows and off the chart river views. Set in what was the boiler room of the 1870 Lord & Burnham Greenhouse factory, the dining room embraces its industrial bones with steel girders and brick, brick, brick. The red leather banquettes, pewter bar and WPA-era art evokes the feeling of a turn of the century Parisian bistro. Don’t miss the Frites! (63 Main Street, Irvington , 914.591.5888; www.redhatontheriver.com
Salaire, Port Chester: (Lunch: Wed – Sun & Dinner: Tues – Thurs & Sun) Jump at this chance to dine at fish peddler Les Barnes’ aquaculture emporium during HVRW! Here, in this stately cathedral ceilinged room in a hundred year old grain warehouse along the banks of the Byram River, you’ll find another great industrial renovation. Les Barnes delivers a fish happy menu with a killer raw bar served in their dining room or at their cavernous bar/gastro pub where you can get up close and personal with the shell fish. Did we mention that The New York Times did gave them an Excellent rating. (55 Abendroth Ave., Port Chester, 914.939.2425; www.saltaireoysterbar.com)
X2O Xavier’s on the Hudson – Yonkers: (Lunch & Dinner: Mon-Sun) Not only does Chef Peter Kelly’s waterfront spectacular in Yonkers have great food and river views, but he plays HVRW with NO BLACKOUT DATES. X2O is a perennial Hudson Valley favorite and sits in the Hudson River on a turn of the century Victorian pier. Its main dining room with 25 foot vaulted ceilings and walls of glass offer river views from the Tappan Zee to the George Washington Bridge. Peter Kelly’s New American menu with Mediterranean and Asian influences regularly scores in the top ten in the Hudson Valley. (71 Water Grant St., Yonkers; www.xaviers.com)
