Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Spring 2017: Foodies will get a price hike at this spring’s HVRW but a $22.95 three-course lunch or a $32.95 dinner is still a great way way to break the winter blues. Worth The Trip
Frankie & Johnny’s Steakhouse – Rye: (Lunch: Tues-Fri & Dinner Mon-Sun) We don’t do weekend black-outs when we’re traveling for HVRW. So Frankie & Johnny’s is our steak house pick. Rye commuters say it’s as good as the Manhattan original for a USDA prime dry-aged steak, lobster or Dover Sole. With it’s vintage NYC-style steakhouse ambience, lively bar scene and food ratings rivaling Westchester’s best steak-aries, we can overlook the average service ratings. (77 Purchase St., Rye, 914.925.3900; www.frankieandjohnnys.com)
Union – Haverstraw: (Lunch & Dinner: Tues-Sun) The New York Times gave Union it’s second highest ranking in 2010. Since then, Union has climbed into Zagat’s Top 20 and is the Top Latin in the Hudson Valley. Thanks to Chef David Martinez, a former Executive Chef at Peter Kelly’s Freelance Cafe. The menu features Paella Martinez, Sea scallops, golden raisins polenta medallion, candied ginger & cava, raspberry beurre blanc sauce, and Sirloin steak with garlic yucca gratin, & brandy peppercorn sauce. (22-24 New Main Street, Haverstraw, NY, 845.429.4354; www.unionrestaurant.net)
Il Cenacolo – Newburgh: (Lunch Mon-Fri & Dinner: Mon-Fri & Sun) We wouldn’t send you to Newburgh if this wasn’t one of the top rated eateries in HVRW. Their Northern Italian classics outpoint everybody on Zagats except Xaviers at Piedmont and Sushi Nanese in White Plains. Plus, they have a proprietor named Sali and offer Stracottto all Fiorentina (traditional Italian pot roast) and Osso Buco on their HVRW menu. Just don’t go on Saturday if you want the $32.95 special. (228 S. Plank Rd., Newburgh, 845.564.4494; www.ilcenacolorestaurant.com)
Crave Restaurant – Poughkeepsie: (Dinner: Mon-Sun) We discovered this intimate New American last year and now we see it on Zagats list of Best Restaurants in Westchester/Hudson Valley. Tucked away under the Walkway Over the Hudson, you can tie in a scenic walk over the river on this steel cantilevered bridge built in 1889 (a mile and a quarter long) with your meal. Best of all this New American has no HVRW exclusions. (Start texting your BFF’s.) (129 Washington St., Poughkeepsie, 845.452.3501; www.craverestaurantandlounge)
Restaurant X – Congers: (Lunch & Dinner: Mon-Sun) We love that Peter Kelly plays HVRW with no blackouts but don’t dawdle if you want to get into Restaurant X. Set in a country house in Congers it offers a variety of rooms each with its own distinctive ambience. Including, the Bully Boy Bar where dinner is served next to a roaring fire. Kelly’s New American cuisine, here, is rated neck and neck with X2O but offers a very different vibe if you prefer a more intimate setting. (117 Rt. 303 N., Congers, www.xaviers.com)
Wasabi Japanese Restaurant – Nyack: (Lunch & Dinner: Mon-Thurs & Sun) Chef Doug Chi Nguyen’s restaurants have received consistently good press over the years and this one in Nyack is one of the top 3 Japanese restaurants in the Hudson Valley and the top rated Japanese playing in HVRW. Recognized for his innovative creations and artistic plating, Nguyen’s Nyack hot spot also sports a sleek NYC vibe. Plus, he makes a green tea cheesecake and a flourless chocolate cake. (110 Main St., Nyack, 845.358.7977; www.wasabichi.com)
The Bocuse or American Bounty – Hyde Park: (Lunch & Dinner: Tues-Sat) Two restaurants at the Culinary Institute of America are playing HVRW with no black-out dates. Including the farm to table American Bounty that is one of the Hudson Valley’s top rated New Americans not owned by Peter Kelly. And The Bocuse, CIA’s regional French offering named after legendary French chef Paul Bocuse. The Bocuse boasts that they have re-imagined traditional French cooking. They certainly have re-imagined traditional French decor. Worth the trip just for the room. Dinner: Tues-sat. (1946 Campus Drive, Hyde Park, 845.451.1011 for American Bounty or 845.451.1012 for Bocuse; www.ciarestaurantgroup.com)
Saltaire – Port Chester: (Lunch: Tues- Fri & Dinner: Mon-Thurs & Sun) HVRW is a low cost way to introduce yourself to this Port Chester aquaculture emporium, Les Barnes, the son of a London Fish & Chips peddler, delivers a fish happy menu in a stately cathedral ceilinged room in an old grain warehouse along the banks of the Byram River. The New York Times gave them an Excellent rating, We liked it too. Read our review. (55 Abendroth Ave., Port Chester, 914.939.2425; www.saltaireoysterbar.com)
Valley Restaurant, Inn At The Garrison: (Dinner: Thurs-Sat) Forget about the traditional Windsor chairs in their dining room and it’s location in an Inn at a golf club. Valley received an Excellent rating from the NY Times and is ranked No. 3 on Zagats list of Best Farm to Table restaurants. They always put together a great HVRW menu and the panoramic Hudson Highland views make this one worth the trip. (2015 US 9 at Snake Hill Rd., Garrison, 845. 424. 3604; www.thegarrison.com)
X2O Xavier’s on the Hudson – Yonkers: Lunch & Dinner: Mon-Sun) Chef Peter Kelly’s waterfront spectacular in Yonkers made the Zagats list of Most Popular Restaurants in Westchester/Hudson Valley for three consecutive years. X2O sits in the Hudson River on a turn of the century Victorian pier. Its main dining room with 25 foot vaulted ceilings and walls of glass offer river views from the Tappan Zee to the George Washington Bridge. Kelly’s New American menu with Med/Asian influences regularly scores in the top ten in the Hudson Valley. (71 Water Grant St., Yonkers; www.xaviers.com)
