Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival 2023 Summer Season
Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival 2023 Summer Season
This year the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival will return to it’s traditional format of staging a Shakespeare tragedy or historical play, a Shakespeare comedy and a non- Bard wild card. They will open with Shakespeare’s Henry V, a tale many know from the 2019 movie The King starring Timothée Chalamet. Here, Shakespeare’s play focuses in on the King of England unshackling himself from his ambivalence about leadership to lead a badly outnumbered English army to victory against the French in the historic Battle of Agincourt. Henry V will open in previews on May 31 and run for 17 additional shows through July 1. Plus an additional 11 productions from July 19 through August 21.
One of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies, Love’s Labor’s Lost, about a king and three friends who swear off women (none too successfully) for their studies, and a little intermittent fasting, will open in previews on July 12 and run for 31 productions through August 21. Finally, HVSF’s reimagining of the story of The Odyssey from the point of view of a character often relegated to the margins of the story, Penelope is a musical love letter to all those who wait: For someone they love. Penelope will open in previews on September 2 and run for fifteen stagings through September 17.
HVSF’s summer productions are staged in an open-air, all weather theater tent that seats 540 – almost in the round. Dramatic views of the Hudson Highlands grace the space beyond the stage at each performance. And the grounds surrounding the tent offers breathtaking pre-show picnic opportunities.
