Jacob Burns Film Center Series: After the Golden Age – Movie Musicals Since 1955
The Jacob Burns Film Center’s new six-week film series explores the movie musical in the seven decades since MGM’s “Golden Age,” which featured such titles as The Wizard of Oz (1939), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), An American in Paris (1951) and Singin’ in the Rain (1952). Each of the screenings in the series will be accompanied by a short lecture from Jeff Hughes, graduate of the Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies at NYU, contextualizing that week’s film historically and offering a wide variety of complementary clips.
The series will begin on Sunday mornings at 11am beginning on March 10 with the Comden and Green musical It’s Always Fair Weather starring Gene Kelly and run through April 21 when the Movie Musicals series will conclude with Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Between them, the series will feature screening and lectures
