Lyndhurst Reopens with Spring Crafts Fair
Lyndhurst Reopens with Spring Crafts Fair: Lyndhurst Mansion, the historic 19-room Gothic Revival Tarrytown estate, once owned by Jay Gould will reopen for the season on April 30 when its Spring Crafts Show returns with 150 vendors (scaled down from 300) in a modified socially-distanced layout. Under current state guidelines, admissions will be significantly limited and all tickets will need to be purchased online, in advance.
The three-day fair which will run through May 2, comes just in time for Mother’s Day. Shop the fair for handmade original fashions, accessories and jewelry; functional and sculptural works in ceramics, glass, metal, fiber, wood and mixed media; and fine art painting, printmaking, drawing and photography. Plus, gourmet foods, specialties, concessions and tastings from local distilleries, wineries and cider houses.
Landscape tours of the grounds will begin on May 7th and we suspect as state guidelines on live events and venues loosen into the spring and summer that house tours and other signature Lyndhurst events will return. While their Spring Blossoms Flower and Antique Show won’t return until 2022, we look forward to bringing you information on their Summer Sunset Jazz series on their picnic-friendly Bowling Alley Hill, as we do every year.
Set on sweeping lawns and specimen trees on park-like grounds, Lyndhurst with its fanciful turrets and asymmetrical outline, novel for the post-colonial era in which it was built, was critically panned when it was built in 1838. But it is now seen as a master work of Gothic design.
And Lyndhurst has become a favorite setting for Hollywood over the years. It was the prime location for the filming of the House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows in 1970 and 1971. It was also used as a location for the 1990 film Reversal of Fortune, about Sunny and Klaus von Bulow, starring Jeremy Irons and Glenn Close that was nominated for three Academy Awards. More recently Lyndhurst also served as a location in Gloria, The Cradle Will Rock (1999), and Winter’s Tale in 2013.
The estate also features the nation’s first steel-framed conservatory, a rose garden and a fernery. You can find more information about Lyndhurst on our Bucket List: Lyndhurst Mansion.
