Mid-Hudson Ranks Near Bottom Administering Vaccine Doses
Mid-Hudson Ranks Near Bottom Administering Vaccine Doses: New York’s Mid-Hudson Region, which includes Westchester County, sits near the bottom of the State’s ten regions in terms of administering received doses of the COVID vaccines. As of January 31, the Mid-Hudson Region has administered just 64% of its received COVID supply – the state’s second lowest after the Mohawk Valley at 60%. Only two other region’s were below 70% including New York’s North Country at 65% and Southern Tier at 69%. The state’s best performing region’s are Central New York at 94%, the Finger Lakes at 82% and the Capital Region at 80%.
New York’s COVID Positive Test Rate Drops for 24th Consecutive Day
In other announcements this weekend, Governor Andrew Cuomo cited January 31 as the twenty-fourth consecutive day of declines in New York’s 7-day positive test rate for the coronavirus, which currently sits at 4.8%. That’s down from 5.4% last week, 6.54% two weeks ago and a Fall/Winter peak of 7.94% in the weeks following Thanksgiving. New York State’s positivity rate peaked at 49.9% on March 30 and was as low as .09% on September 18. It wasn’t until November 5th that it returned to as high as 2%.
Nationally, the 7-day rolling average positive test rate dropped from 9.1% to 8.1% last week. It’s fall winter peak was 13.7% earlier in January, according to the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine’s Coronavirus Resource Center. The US positive test rate peaked at 21.9% in the spring and bottomed at 4.1% in June and 4% in October.
Mid-Hudson/Westchester County Lags the State in Positive Test Rate
The Mid-Hudson region’s positive COVID test rate at 6.1% also remains stubbornly high. That’s the second highest reading amongst New York’s ten regions, fractionally behind Long Island which rose to the top of the charts last week with a 6.3% positive test rate.
Westchester County’s positive test rate was in line with its region, which also includes Putnam, Rockland, Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan and Orange counties, at 6.03% last week. That’s down from 6.6% the previous week. Westchester’s proximity to The Bronx, whose 7.6% positivity rate is the highest in New York City, may be a contributing factor to the county’s stubborn infection rate. New York is planning on opening a new mass vaccination site at Yankee Stadium, which will be reserved for Bronx residents, to address the borough’s needs.
Cuomo announces NYC restaurants will reopen soon
As a result of declining positive COVID test rates in recent weeks, the governor announced over the weekend that New York City restaurants will reopen for indoor dining on Valentine’s Day, February 14. And, this morning he announced that New York State Mass Vaccination facilities will reschedule all vaccination appointments for Monday and Tuesday February 1 & 2 due to the ensuing snow storm which threatens to dump anywhere from 12 to 24 inches of snow on New York City and Westchester County.
