Grasses
Tufted Hair Grass: This low grower is one of the few ornamental grasses that thrive in moderated shade. The flower heads give off a golden hue in the summer. These plants come in a gallon bucket and grown one to two feet tall. Plant them in masses for edging, borders and paths or to add an architectural element to the winter landscape.
Ferns
Lady Fern: These Lady Ferns, also called Lady in Red, have red stems surrounded by lacy, symmetrical, tapering fronds. Although they are delicate in appearance, they are hardy plants and can tolerate dry and poor soils. The Lady Fern likes moist soil and part to full shade and provides cover and nesting material for birds. They come in one gallon buckets and grow to 15–24” tall.
Trees, Shrubs and Vines
Lowbush Blueberry: This deciduous shrub is a three season threat delivering pink-white bell-shaped flowers in spring; a sweet, small blueberries in summer, and brilliant-red foliage in fall. It does well in rock gardens, or in mass planting and is a special value to native bees. Plant in moist to dry, acidic soil in sun or part shade areas. It grows 8–16” tall. DR DT BD BF BE
Spring to Summer Perennials
Shooting Star: Basal rosette of smooth green leaves gives rise to a slender stem bearing clusters of nodding, sharply pointed flowers with backswept white to light-pink to purple petals. A spring ephemeral that is dormant by mid-summer. Of special value to bumblebees. Plant in moist soil, part shade, 8–14” tall. DR BE
Summer to Fall Perennials
Threadleaf coreopsis: Birds eat the seeds of these bright-yellow, daisy-like flowers that are long bloomers from summer through early fall. The slender foliage adds texture to the garden. These plants are drought resistance. DR DT BD BF
