Featured Flower (Threatened & Endangered)
This Twin-Leaf (Jefferson diphylia) spring perennial is threatened in New York and endangered in New Jersey. It’s blue-green foliage emerges with dainty white, short-lived blossoms. Leaves expand into pairs of tiny elephant ears. Look beneath in mid-summer to find urn-shaped seed pods that explode when touched, a fun feature in a children’s garden. Clumps expand slowly.
Grasses
We like the Carex appalachia, a compact grass with fine blades perfect for edging, groundcover, or lawn substitute for low-traffic areas. It that can be grown in part to full shade in average to dry soil. It’s flowers are used by pollinators and its seeds by birds.
Ferns
And the Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), a leathery fern with glossy, evergreen fronds that is robust and easy to establish and provides winter interest in the garden. It grows one to three feet tall in moist to dry soil in part to full shade.
Bushes, Vines & Trees
In the bushes, trees and vines category we’re going with the Lowbush blueberry (Vaccinum angustifolium). This native bee attractor will grown 8 to 16 feet tall and yields bell-shaped flowers in the spring, sweet blueberries in the summer and brilliant red foliage in the fall. (How about that combo?) Plant them in moist to dry to soil, acidic soil in sunny or part shady areas.
Spring to Summer Perennials
We are phlox lovers, so we can’t resist this Amazing Grace Creeping phlox (Phlox subulate) that grows 4 to 6 inches tall. Phlox is perfect for rock gardens, over a stone wall or as gorund cover. It creates a colorful carpet in May, attracts butterflies and bees and should be planted in average soil in sunny to part shady areas.
Summer to Fall Perennials
And how about these Oxeye Sunflowers (Heliopsis helianthoides)? It’s yellow blooms last throughout the summer. It attracts hummingbirds. And it spreads when happy. It likes average soil and sun and grows 3 to 6 feet tall.
