In-Person Summer Academic Enrichment at Harvey
Parents concerned that the development of their children’s academic skills may have stalled from frequent disruptions in the learning process during the pandemic can take advantage of the RISE program at The Harvey School this summer. RISE, the Re-engage in Summer Enrichment instructional experience, is designed to re-engage local students in grades 5 through 9 in classroom learning while building confidence and strengthening their skills in a nurturing, engaging, and positive environment.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools switched to fully remote learning or a hybrid model, which, in many cases, created learning gaps, and skills usually fostered in the classroom were left undeveloped,” said Phil Lazzaro, the head of Harvey’s upper school.
Held in state-of-the-art facilities on Harvey’s 125-acre campus, RISE is aimed at helping students re-emerge as social classroom learners and develop writing, computation, analysis, critical thinking, close reading, speaking, and listening skills. “Each participant will also have the opportunity to become a Rising Scholar enriched by classes in art, music, athletics, drama, dance, robotics, creative writing, and more,” Mr. Lazzaro said.
One-week sessions beginning June 28 and running through the week of August 2 will offer academics in the morning from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by a one-hour lunch, and afternoon enrichment from 1 to 3 p.m.
In the morning academics, students will choose three from a list of options that include Writers Workshop, Critical Reading, Foundations in Math, Spanish – Language & Culture, 21st Century American History, and Global Skill Building. Choices for enrichment in the afternoon will include activities in art studio, robotics, athletics, playwriting, culinary arts, creative writing, performing arts – dance, acting, music lessons, TV production and media, and photography.
The cost for the week is $650. To learn more, or to register, visit www.harveyschool.org, or call 914-232-0581.
