The Patsy Cline Tribute Show, Tarrytown Music Hall – Sat, 4/1: 8pm. Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Performing Arts Center Purchase – Sun, 4/2: 3pm: Jazz legend Phil Cohran’s seven sons mix brass with hip hop. They have played with Prince and Mick Jones (The Clash) and were the subject of the documentary film Brothers Hypnotic. Their song, “War” was featured in Hunger Games. “Trafficking in a free-flowing blend of jazz, hip-hop and Afrobeat, the group can resemble the world’s funkiest marching band one minute, an unhinged New Orleans funeral procession the next. “ — Los Angeles Times (735 Anderson Hill Rd., Purchase; www.artscenter.org)
Peter Frampton Raw, Paramount Hudson Valley –Thurs., 4/6: 8pm. Peter Frampton delivers stripped-down acoustic versions of his hits and more from his new album Acoustic Classics. Rosanne Cash, Performing Arts Center Purchase – Fri, 4/7: 8pm: One of the country’s preeminent singer-songwriters, Rosanne Cash celebrates her triple Grammy winning album, The River & the Thread – a collection of original songs that re-connect Rosanne to the American South. The songs offer a poetic survey of people and places that define the American South. The album follows her Grammy nominated and award-winning album The List from 2009. Hooteroll? + Plus! Drummer, Capitol Theatre – Fri, 4/7: 8pm. Drummer Joe Russo and an all-star roster of musicians (including reeds, flute and trumpet) perform the iconic jazz fusion album Hooteroll from Jerry Garcia and keyboardist Howard Wales – and other like-minded compositions. Jazz at Caramoor, The Gotham Kings with Alphonso Horne and Riley Mulherkar – Sat, 4/8: 8pm: After getting a Caramoor audience on their feet at last year’s Jazz Festival, the Gotham Kings return to Katonah for a special evening in Caramoor’s Music Room at the historic Rosen House. Regulars of the New York City jazz scene, prominent young trumpeters Alphonso Horne and Riley Mulherkar fuse the genius of King Oliver with their upbeat brand of New Orleans jazz. Son Volt, Tarrytown Music Hall – Sun, 4/9: 7pm. Alt-country pioneers, and pre-cursors of the Americana movement, Son Volt tours for their new album Notes of Blue inspired by the alt-blues sounds of Mississippi Fred McDowell, Skip James and Nick Drake. Ricky Nelson Remembered with Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, Ridgefield Playhouse – Thurs, 4/13: 8pm. Ricky’s twin sons, who had their own No. 1 hit “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection” with their band Nelson, sing dad’s hits in this multi-media tribute to America’s original teen idol: “Hello Mary Lou”, “Travelin’ Man” and “Garden Party”. Richard Thompson, Tarrytown Music Hall – Fri, 4/14: 8pm. Named by Rolling Stone as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time, Richard Thompson is also one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards for Songwriting on both sides of the Atlantic – from the Americana Music Association in Nashville to Britain’s BBC Awards. Trey Anastasio Band, Capitol Theatre – Fri – Sat, 4/14-15: 8pm: After a successful summer run with Phish, Trey hits the road again with his other band, starting with two nights at The Capitol. Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass, Capitol Theatre – Thurs, 4/20: 8pm. Loose interpretations of Grateful Dead songs done in a psychedelic improvisational bluegrass style. “WARNING: If you like your Grateful Dead songs performed in their original way, or if you prefer traditional bluegrass, this is not the project for you. Rufus Wainwright, Tarrytown Music Hall – Thurs, 4/20: 8pm. Elton John called him “the greatest songwriter on the planet.” We like his “Cigarettes and Chocolate”. The son Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Rufus swings in the worlds of rock, opera and theater. Loretta Lynn, Tarrytown Music Hall – Sat, 4/22: 8pm. This coal miner’s daughter was married at the age of 13 and went on to become the most awarded country singer of all time. Barenaked Ladies, Ridgefield Playhouse – Thurs., 4/27: 8pm. Multi-Grammy nominees, Barenaked Ladies released BNL Rocks Red Rocks in May of 2016. It was recorded at the fabled Morrison, CO amphitheater during the band’s “Last Summer on Earth’ Tour. Jazz at The Center III, A Tribute to Sonny Rollins, Performing Arts Center – Sat, 4/29: 8pm: Cited by Miles Davis as the greatest tenor ever, Sonny Rollins is an inventive saxophonist and an astonishing soloist. His fluid and harmonically innovated ideas and identifiable sound have influenced generations of performers. Rollins recorded with Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk and the Modern Jazz Quartet. He helped proliferate mainstream jazz music to a wide audience. Lucinda Williams, Tarrytown Music Hall – Thurs-Fri, 5/4-5: 8pm. Americana star, Lucinda Williams won her first of three Grammy Awards for her 1998 album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. She tours for her new album Ghosts of Highway 20. We like her song “Righteously” – “Be my lover don’t play no game, Just play me John Coltrane.” Her 2015 Caramoor concert was outrageous! The Everly Brothers Experience, Ridgefield Playhouse – Fri., 5/5: 8pm. The Zmed brothers, Zachary and Dylan, (aka The Bird Dogs) pay tribute to the legendary music of The Everly Brothers including “All I Have to Do Is Dream”, “Cathy’s Clown”, “Bye, Bye Love,” “Wake Up Little Susie,” “When Will I Be Loved”, “Til I Kissed You”, “Bird Dog” and more! Cabaret at Caramoor, Melissa Erico – Sat, 5/6: 8;30pm: Tony-nominated Broadway star Melissa Errico performs in the intimate Rosen House Music Room in this special benefit concert. Errico starred in leading roles as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and in Kurt Weill’s One Touch of Venus on Broadway. The Fab Faux perform The Beatles Second Album and Yesterday and Today, Capitol Theatre – Sat, 5/6: 8pm. Rolling Stone called them “the greatest Beatles cover band without the wigs.” Here they perform two early Beatles albums featuring songs like “Thank You Girl”, “You Can’t Do That”, “Please Mister Postman”, “Nowhere Man”, “Drive My Car” and “We Can Work It Out”. Roger McGuinn, Tarrytown Music Hall – Sat, 5/6: 8pm. “Roger really invented folk-rock,” says Bruce Springsteen. Lead singer of The Byrds, McGuinn had the first folk-rock smash hit with Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man”. Love those Ben Franklin frames he used to wear, 12 string Rickenbacker guitar, “Ballad of Easy Rider”, “Chimes of Freedom”, and “Drug Store Truck Driving Man” … just to name a few. Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band, Ridgefield Playhouse – Sat, 5/6: 8pm. Bedford resident, Paul Shaffer, best known as David Letterman’s musical director and sidekick, is a Grammy winner and has performed with Donald Fagen, Robert Plant, Warren Zevon, Blues Traveler, Chicago, Diana Ross, Brian Wilson, Yoko Ono, Cyndi Lauper, Earl Scruggs and more.
