Stone Barns Arts & Ecology Gallery Opens
Stone Barns Arts & Ecology Gallery Opens: The Stone Barns Center’s new Gallery space opened on March 31 with an exhibition curated by Abby Bangser, founder of Object & Thing, an art and design fair platform. The exhibition, that will run though May 9, features seven artists, all of whom have made unique, yet functional works that embrace materials from the Stone Barns farm.
The exhibition is part of Stone Barns’ Arts & Ecology initiative that sets out to accelerate change in regional farm systems by collaborating with and supporting artisans whose work and materials highlight the links between craft and farm sustainability.
Object & Thing’s curation of the exhibition focused on artists it champions that share a deep awareness and reverence for the origin of the materials that inform their practices. Artists were offered the opportunity to visit with the Arts & Ecology team at Stone Barns Center and identify materials for their pieces.
The participating artists include Johnny Ortiz, who is also a Chef in Residence at Stone Barns, and Megumi Arai whose traditional Japanese noren (fabric room dividers) are made with fabrics dyed with dried dahlias, marigold, and sumac from Stone Barns and onion skin from the Blue Hill Kitchen. Frances Palmer works with floral material from Stone Barns for her ceramic pitchers with traditional Chinese glazes. While Jane Crisp’s garden drugs are made with steam bent wood and are displayed with the farm’s spring floral offerings. Also on exhibit are table top vessels from Green River Projects carved from black cherry wood found on the farm; Kiva Motnyk’s napkins and table runners and Gregg Moore’s porcelain “soil plates” that incorporates soil from the farm.
All of the works in the exhibition will be available for sale between March 31-May 9 at stonebarnscenter.org/gallery, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Stone Barns Center.
The exhibition can be visited through advance reservations offered by Stone Barns Center, and to all guests dining at Chef in Residence at Stone Barns or picking-up resourcED boxes from Blue Hill.
