Ten Spring Trail & Road Races: The 2019 road race and trail season is upon us. Here we list 10 local road & trail races and charity walks… carefully curated for road runners and weekend warriors.
Lottery Closed for 2019! Leatherman’s Loop 10K, Cross River, Sun, 4/28: 9am: One of the largest trail races on the east coast, the course is “well within the capabilities of almost anyone curiously self-motivated whether you’re just a weekend warrior or a dyed-in-the-wool mountain maniac. It’s features a foot-boggling array of barriers strategically placed to impede forward progress of the swift and sure-footed.” Registration lottery opens in January and maxes out quickly. Bring food donations to the race, “the Loop” has donated 8,000 lbs of food to the Community Center of Westchester over the past 10 years. Local! The Janet Jacobson 10th Annual Bedford Hills Run for the Hills 5K, Sat, 5/4: 8:30am: This grueling, steep and not always paved 5K-road race from the Bedford Hills Neighborhood Association begins at the Bedford Hills Train Station and loops out Bedford Center Road and back on Buxton Road.The race serves as a fundraiser for a high school graduate who lives in the hamlet. Let’s Not Be Still, Star Legacy Festival & 5K Run & Walk for Neonatal Death Prevention, S. Salem , Sat, 5/18: 9am: This local Star Legacy Chapter was founded in 2015 by parents who have experienced pregnancy loss. Star Legacy is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to preventing neonatal death and improving care for families who experience such tragedies. Local! 6th Annual Stayin’ Alive 5K & Fun Run, Armonk, Sat. 5/18: 8am: The run starts at The Windmill Club and continues through Windmill’s woodsy community. Stayin’ Alive has raised $150,000 for needed equipment for first responder’s in North Castle (Armonk, Banksville & N. White Plains) and surrounding towns. The race has attracted over 1400 runners over the past five years. The .6 mile Fun Run around Windmill Lake begins at 9am. (The Windmill Club, 10 Maple Way, Armonk; Register here.)
Local! New Castle 5k & 10K Road Race & Fun Run, Sun, 5/19: 8am: This challenging course takes you from Town Hall through some of Chappaqua’s most scenic landscapes. Runners get a police escort, water stations and a sag wagon. There are awards in 8 age categories. The one mile fun run begins at 8am. The 5K & 10K races start at 8:30am. (Town Hall, 200 S. Crohn’s & Colitis Take Steps Walk & Festival, Purchase College, Sun, 5/19: 4pm: Run or walk to find a cure for digestive diseases. The Take Steps 5K walk is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s largest event of the year. This run/walk festival offers IBD friendly food, Kids activities and local entertainment. The festival starts at 4pm and the walk start is at 5pm. (735 Anderson Hill Rd.; Register here.)
Local! Lewisboro/South Salem Memorial Day Races & Fair, 10K, 5K, Mile Fun Run & Pee Wee Races, Mon, 5/27: 8am: The 10K race at 8am takes you on challenging South Salem hills.The 5K starts at 9:30am. Both races are USA Track and Field certified. The youth Mile Fun Run is at 10:45am and Pee Wee races for 2-8 year olds are at 11:05am. Register online or on race day at 7am. Beautiful Trail! Rockwood Ramble 10K, Rockefeller State Park, Sleepy Hollow, Sat, 6/1: 9am: This beautiful and challenging 10K course on carriage trails through Rockefeller State Park Preserve begins at Rockwood Hall overlooking the Hudson River. All proceeds benefit the park’s trail maintenance. This race features an accurate, wheel-measured course with results posted immediately after the race. Open to all! Pound Ridge Recreation 5K Road Race, Kids Race & Independence Day Fireworks, Sat, 6/29: 9am: Run over rolling hills and through the streets of Pound Ridge from the Pound Ridge Elementary School to Town Park. Register online or on race day beginning at 8am. Children’s races begin immediately after the 5K. Open to non-residents.
