Sister Act, Westchester Broadway Theatre – Thurs, 4/5-Sun, 7/1: The big glitzy musical Sister Act fared better than the original movie. It received four Olivier Award nominations for its original stage production at London’s West End Theatre. It moved to Broadway in 2011 where it received five Tony and five Drama Desk Award nominations. The musical features music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. Menken has won eight Academy Awards for his Disney Scores that include The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas. His stage hits include Little Shop of Horrors and Sister Act. Pirelli World Challenge & Royals Car Show, Rock Park Memorial Day Season Opener – Fri-Mon, 5/25-28: The Pirelli World Challenge series serves up races from all 7 car classes from the Big Dogs (Cadillacs, Bentley’s, Lomborghinis & Porches) to the TC class of Mustangs and BMW 228is, and the smallest class of Chevy Sonics and Mazda 2s. Bethpage Air Show, Jones Beach – Sat-Sun, 5/26-27: 10am-3pm: The US any Blue Angels headline the Jones Beach 15th Annual Memorial Day Weekend Air Show. Plus The Royal Canadian Air Force Snow Birds, the F22 Raptor the Air Force’s newest fighter aircraft. Get there early. This show, up to 200,000 people fill the beach on a single day. It is not unusual for the parking lots to be filled by 9:00am (if not earlier). When this happens, the parkways are closed and people are turned away. Lewisboro/South Salem Memorial Day Races & Fair, 10K, 5K, Mile Fun Run & Pee Wee Races – Mon, 5/28: 8am: The 10K race at 8am that takes you on challenging South Salem hills. The 5K starts at 9:30am. Both races are USA Track and Field certified. The youth Mile Fun Run is at 10:45am and Pee Wee races for 2-8 year olds are at 11:05am. Register online or on race day at 7am. Rockefeller’s collection of 20th-century sculptures; the underground art galleries featuring a collection of Picasso tapestries; and the Coach Barn’s classic automobiles and horse-drawn carriages. Lyndhurst Mansion Tours, Tarrytown – Thurs-Mon, 5/4-9/24: 10am-4pm: Take a one-hour guided tour of the historic Lyndhurst mansion overlooking the Hudson River. The Gothic Revival mansion has been used as a movie set for six major motion pictures including House of Dark Shadows (1970), Reversal of Fortune (1990), Cradle Will Rock (1999) and Winter’s Tale (2013). It was built in 1938 by William Paulding, a former NYC Mayor, and purchased by Union Pacific Railroad tycoon Jay Gould in 1880 as a summer home. (635 S. Broadway, Tarrytown; www.lyndhurst.org)
What To Do Bucket List! Rockefeller State Park Preserve: Our favorite hiking in the area is the 25 miles of carriage paths on 1400 acres of Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Pleasantville. These low-impact, impeccably maintained trails offer a range of hikes from flat walks and moderate grades to a steep climb. The deep forest, river and lakeside trails never feel too manicured. What To Do Bucket List! PepsiCo Sculpture Gardens Reopen – Sat-Sun: 10am-4pm through 10/31: The Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens at PepsiCo’s World Headquarters in Purchase is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from April 1 through October 31. The Gardens features 45 pieces of large-scale outdoor pieces from some of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century. Including Henry Moore and Alexander Calder. Plus over 6,000 trees from 38 species, a Koi pond, fountains and formal gardens with topiary, hedges and thousands of flowering bulbs. Read more about this WTD Bucket List-er!
Essex Steam Train & Riverboat Ride, Daily 6/17-8/27, Weekends 9/1-10/22: Take a 2 ½ hour narrated train and riverboat ride through what the Nature Conservancy calls “one of the last great places on earth,” the Connecticut River Valley. The train passes farms, waterfalls, and wetland habitats with blue heron and egrets. The riverboat cruise on the Connecticut River passes the historic Gillette Castle, Goodspeed Opera House and Haddam Swing Bridge.
