New York Botanical Garden, The Orchid Show – Sat, 3/3- Sun, 4/22. The Orchid Show celebrates its 16th year at The New York Botanical Garden with this display of thousands of orchids featuring a series of installations by Daniel Ost, the international star of flower arrange. Hailed as the ”Picasso of flower arranging”, his large-scale flower displays have been compared to the work of sculptors Claes Oldenburg, Anish Kapoor, and Andy Goldsworthy. Open Tues-Sun, 10am-6pm. PepsiCo Sculpture Gardens Opens Sat-Sun, 3/31 – 10/28: 10am-4pm The Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens at PepsiCo’s World Headquarters in Purchase, opens for the season on Sat, 3/31. The Garden features 45 pieces of large-scale outdoor pieces from some of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century. Including Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, August Rodin and Alberto Giacometti. This ninety minute stroll will take you through stream-lined woods and park-like settings with over 6,000 trees from 38 species, lawns, ponds, fountains, a koi pond, formal gardens with topiary, hedges and thousands of flowering bulbs. Sister Act, Westchester Broadway Theatre – Thurs, 4/5-Sun, 7/1: The big glitzy musical Sister Act fared better than the original movie. It received four Olivier Award nominations for its original stage production at London’s West End Theatre. It moved to Broadway in 2011 where it received five Tony and five Drama Desk Award nominations. The musical features music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. Menken has won eight Academy Awards for his Disney Scores that include The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas. His stage hits include Little Shop of Horrors and Sister Act. Eternal Spring, The Westchester Phil with Edgar Meyer, Performing Arts Center – Sun, 4/8: 3pm: The New York Times called double bassist, Edgar Meyer “the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument.” He has a mantel-full of Grammys, a MacArthur “Genius” grant and a remarkable instinct for collaboration with the likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Béla Fleck, Emanuel Ax, and now, the Westchester Philharmonic. Max in your backyard! Backyard Wilderness, IMAX Movies, The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk – Daily: 3/24 – 9/3: 11am, 1 & 3pm: This new Imax movie at the Maritime Aquarium was filmed outside the Croton on Hudson home of the Academy Award-nominated (Children of Fate) filmmakers Andrew Young and Susan Todd. “With input from our science advisors, we worked on filming scenes of the animals that actually live in our backyard, which is part of the eastern forest ecosystem,” Young told Westchester Magazine.
