What To Do: With the Kids Summer: Wolves, carnivals and circuses and lots of stuff on the farm. We’ve got local cruises and bi-plane rides, movies, music, folk dancing and fireworks. In sum, a mixed bag of summer what to dos for the whole family.
Memorial Day Weekend
LIGHTSCAPES – Van Cortland Manor Extended through Jun 12: This springtime garden fantasy from the creators of the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze is a nighttime display of sculpture, light, sound and special effects. Recycled elements are building blocks for intergalactic flora and woodland creatures. Otherworldly mushrooms, floating fairies, butterflies, a massive praying mantis, a super-size birdhouse, and a dino-sized egg are among the state of the art illuminations that are set against the natural landscape of Van Cortland Manor. Squiggle through an enormous caterpillar and walk through a giant garden maze. This event runs Thurs-Mon, 5/26-30 and has now been extended on Fri-Sun, 6/3-5 & 6/10-12. Bicycle Sundays on the Bronx River Parkway: Friends of Westchester County Parks closes off a six and a half mile stretch of the Bronx River Parkway for the exclusive use of bicyclists, joggers, scooters and strollers. Park your car at the County Center lot and bike to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers. Round trip 13.1 miles. Bicycle Sundays return on May 1 and run through the last Sunday in June. www.friendsofwestchesterparks.com
Lime Rock Park Memorial Day Season Opener: After a three-year absence the SCAA Pirelli World Challenge returns to Lime Rock Park for their Memorial Day Season Opener. Four big races are scheduled for GTS, GT and GT Cup plus the park’s first-ever races of the all-new United States Formula 4 open-wheel single seat championship. On Sunday, the Royals Car Show draws 200-400 prime vehicles from rare sports cars to muscle cars from the 60s and 70s. Fri-Sun, 5/27-29: check schedule. New! Spirit of the Sound Lighthouse Cruises: The Norwalk Aquarium’s Spirit of the Sound catamaran introduces two new Long Island Sound Lighthouse Cruises. Their 4 ½ hour Central Long Island Sound cruise visits five lighthouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cruises depart at 10am on Sat, 3/5, 4/2 and 5/7. Their Western Long Island cruise will make passes at Greens Ledge, Sheffield Island, Stamford Harbor, Great Captain Island, Execution Rocks, Stepping Stones, Sands Point and Eaton Neck. Afternoon & Sunset Sails on the Schooner Soundwaters: Board the 80’ Tall Ship Soundwaters, the ship that Pete Seeger made famous, for a two-hour journey on the Long Island Sound. The Schooner Soundwaters sails from Boccuzzi Park in Stamford on Saturdays at 3-5pm and Sundays from 2-4pm from June 25 to September 25. Soundwaters also sets sail for the sunset on a varied schedule from Thursday to Sunday, June 23-Septbember 25. Check dates & times. Marine Life Cruises at The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk: The Norwalk Aquarium’s 63 foot research catamaran, Spirit of the Sound runs silently on electric power for its 2½-hour “study cruises” on the Long Island Sound. Study marine biodiversity from the water’s surface to the bottom of the Sound. Cruise guides dredge up fish, crabs, mollusks and more. Sleeping with Wolves – Wolf Conservation Center: Camp out overnight with the 20+ wolves that call the WCC home! Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome: This “living” museum of antique aviation, offers one of the largest collections of early aero planes (1909 to 1939) in the world plus weekend airshows, and bi-plane rides. The museum displays aircraft form the Pioneer Era, World War I and the Lindbergh Barnstorming era. Saturday airshows chronicle the History of Flight with Pioneer, World War I and Lindbergh era aircraft including a 1909 Bleriot – the oldest flying aircraft in the United States. Bicycle Sundays: 60,000 people a year break out their bikes to “ride the parkway,” a Westchester tradition since 1974. Sponsored by Con Edison and the Friends of Westchester County Parks, a 6.5-mile stretch of the Bronx River Parkway is closed for the exclusive use of bicyclists, joggers, scooters and strollers. Living History: Military Reenactment Day at Boscobel: To honor its historic ties, Boscobel presents, “The Dyckman Family at War: An Encampment of Soldiers from the American Revolution through the Civil War”. Tongue in Cheek: The Inflatable Art of Jimmy Kuehnle – Hudson River Museum: Bright, bouncing, inflatable sculptures that are an exciting art form and a witty commentary on our interests and enthusiasms. Made from vinyl-coated polyester fabric, Kuehnle’s creations inflate and deflate, pulsing and “breathing” like an organism, with intriguing names like You Lick Me, I Lick You (shaped like tongues), Hot Polyester Bladder Lung, You Wear What I Wear and Hello Bye.
